Kush calls his specific style of artwork "Metaphorical Realism", as he uses metaphor in his art to build a bridge between unrelated objects. In his paintings, he takes several distant concepts and connects them in a creative, and often surprising, way. He himself says, "The world is the mirror of Metaphor", and that is what he expresses through his art.
A common element in his paintings is a flower, because he has loved plants ever since his childhood. He also frequently uses clouds, human beings, books and butterflies in his complex, multilayered images. His style, though extremely imaginative, is also painstakingly realistic and detailed, which has earned him a large following in recent years. |
Vladimir KushVladimir Kush was born in 1965 on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia. He was considered a prodigy, as he started expressing himself with art since he was a toddler. At the age of seven, he began attending art school, where he was encouraged to let out his creativity. He was so inspired by this that he enrolled in the Moscow Higher Art and Craft School at age 17. However, he was drafted a year later, where his talent was used to paint propagandist posters. Though he had been painting for a while already, his career took off in 1990, when his exhibition in Germany proved to be wildly popular. He moved to Los Angeles soon after, earning money by painting portraits. Kush eventually saved up enough money to move to Hawaii, which he describes as his "Promised Land". He opened his first gallery in 2001, and continues to paint and exhibit to this day.
